Celebrating 20 Years of Innovation: ABB's Shanghai Instrumentation Factory

Introduction: A Milestone in Industrial Automation

ABB is commemorating two decades of excellence at its Shanghai Instrumentation factory, a facility that has played a pivotal role in supporting China's rapid automation market growth and contributing to the country's industrial development since its establishment in 2004. Initially focused on manufacturing pressure transmitters, the factory has grown into a global manufacturing hub, producing a comprehensive range of instrumentation solutions.

Expanding Product Portfolio and Technological Advancement

Over the years, the Shanghai factory has continuously innovated, producing high-performance instruments that span pressure, flow, level, temperature, and analytical measurement. Notably, it manufactures some of ABB’s most advanced solutions, including the AquaMaster 4 Mobile Comms, a world-first electromagnetic flowmeter with bidirectional connectivity. The facility is also behind the FSS400 Swirl and FSV400 Vortex flowmeters, which feature Ethernet-APL connectivity—setting new standards for flow measurement technologies.

Commitment to Digitalization and Calibration Excellence

As the automation market evolves, ABB’s Shanghai factory has kept pace by investing in digitalization and smart technologies. With state-of-the-art calibration capabilities, including the largest fluid and air calibration rigs within ABB, the factory is recognized as a center of excellence for flowmeter calibration. The facility's air calibration rig is particularly impressive, featuring a continuous flow adjustment range of 1 to 7000 m³/h, underscoring its ability to meet the growing demands of industrial applications.

Recognition and Awards for Innovation and Excellence

The Shanghai Instrumentation factory’s commitment to quality and innovation has garnered significant recognition. In 2023, the facility received the "Manufacturer of the Year" award at the Instrumentation Excellence Awards for producing a supersized electromagnetic flowmeter with a three-meter diameter. Additionally, its Ultrasonic Level Transmitter won the prestigious Red Dot Design Award in 2021, and in 2016, the factory earned the ABB CEO Silver Excellence Award.

Conclusion: A Future-Ready Manufacturing Hub

Looking ahead, ABB's Shanghai factory remains at the forefront of industrial instrumentation, constantly pushing the boundaries of measurement and calibration technology. With a robust portfolio of cutting-edge products and a focus on digital innovation, it continues to serve ABB’s customers in China and across the globe. As the automation industry evolves, this factory will remain a key player in shaping the future of industrial automation.
